This is a fantastic result for NYC, who will consider it the crowning achievement of a good season. They will not mind in the slightest that the win did not come from open play. However, they will doubtless be ready to rest tired legs. Portland fought hard throughout this campaign and have delivered some scintillating football at times. To go out on penalties at this stage is so cruel, so they will be determined to not let this slip again.
The Pigeons started the game well, thanks to Castellanos giving NYC the lead just before half-time, finishing the first half 0-1.
The Timbers took the lead in the second half, with a goal from Mora just before the final whistle, leaving the final score at 1-1.
Although the game concluded 1-1 extra time was necessary, since both teams were tied. In the first half neither team scored a goal so it finalised 1-1.
Finally, the result didn’t change so the match finalised 1-1.
Finally, the winner of the match was decided during a penalty shootout in which the victory went to NYC, which was imposed by a score of 2 – 4 penalties after the shootout.
For Portland, Moreno, Paredes, Niezgoda and Valeri, came on for Blanco, Fochive, Asprilla and Van Rankin. NYC brought on Ismael Tajouri, Amundsen and Talles Magno, to replace Rodríguez, Thórarinsson and Medina.
There were bookings for Van Rankin and Chará from Portland. For NYC, Rodríguez, Johnson and Medina saw yellow.
Many don’t like to see tournaments decided in this way, but there can only be one winner. Another fantastic final in this most prestigious tournament.
