Wigan Athletic 1 – SWFC 2: Visitors secure points with win at Dw Stadium

Sheffield Wednesday beats Wigan Athletic 2-1 on Tuesday at Dw Stadium. Wigan Athletic were looking to pick up points after winning their previous two games in the competition. The most recent was against the Cheltenham Town at home (2-0), the other to Accrington Stanley away (4-1). SWFC had managed to pick up a single point in their encounter with Ipswich Town. As the table looks today, Wigan Athletic and SWFC currently occupy 2nd and 9th spots in the league, with 19 points and 15 points respectively after 10 matches.

The Owls started the game well, thanks to a goal from Max Power in the 23rd minute, finalising the first half 0-1.

SWFC continued to apply pressure in the second and were rewarded, with a goal from Callum Paterson at the 60 minute mark. Wigan Athletic in turn, then responded at the 82 minute mark increasing their lead with an effort from Charlie Wyke. The game ended with a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

For Wigan Athletic, Jordan Jones and Stephen Humphrys, came on for James McClean and Will Keane. SWFC brought on Jack Hunt and Olamide Shodipo, to replace Sam Hutchinson and Jaden Brown.

There were bookings for Jack Whatmough and Max Power from Wigan Athletic. For SWFC, Callum Paterson, Cheyenne Dunkley and Bailey Peacock-Farrell saw yellow.

Wigan Athletic will next play Gillingham FC away, with SWFC facing Oxford United at home.
