Wigan Athletic 2 – Cheltenham Town 0: Home fans rewarded with victory at Dw Stadium

Wigan Athletic’s 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town on Saturday, was hard fought at Dw Stadium. Both Wigan Athletic and Cheltenham Town arrived in good form, having secured victories in their previous matches. Wigan Athletic were looking to pick up points after winning their previous two games in the competition. The most recent was against the Accrington Stanley away (4-1), the other to Doncaster Rovers at home (2-1). Cheltenham Town were coming from consecutive wins against Oxford United and Charlton Athletic. After today’s result, Wigan Athletic are in 1st place on the table and has 19 points while Cheltenham Town sit in 14th with 12 points after 9 matches.

Wigan Athletic dominated the first half, with Callum Lang giving Wigan Athletic the lead in the 8th minute. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a goal from Charlie Wyke just before half-time. The score at half time was 2-0. Both teams unable to deliver anything further, the score remained at 2-0 at full time.

Both managers used all available substitutions. For Wigan Athletic, Curtis Tilt, Gavin Massey and Gwion Edwards, came on for Jack Whatmough, James McClean and Callum Lang, Cheltenham Town brought on Taylor Perry, Kyle Vassell and Christian Norton, to replace Lewis Freestone, Alfie May and Kyle Joseph.

The referee booked Jordan Cousins, Callum Lang and Will Keane for Wigan Athletic.

Wigan Athletic will next play Sheffield Wednesday at home, with Cheltenham Town facing Sunderland AFC away.
