Sunderland AFC 2 – Wigan Athletic 1- Home fans rewarded with victory at Stadium of Light

Sunderland AFC’s Lee Johnson saw his side to victory at Stadium of Light. Today’s result, leave both teams on 0 points and sitting in 18th and 19th positions respectively, after their first match.

Wigan Athletic started the game well, with a goal from Gwion Edwards in the 15th minute. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Aiden McGeady equalised for Sunderland AFC, 17 minutes in to see out the first half 1-1.

Sunderland AFC started the second half with renewed vigour, thanks to Ross Stewart finding the net at the 53 minute mark, leaving the final score at 2-1.

In the second round of action in the League One Sunderland AFC will travel to play Milton Keynes Dons and Wigan Athletic will play Rotherham United at home.
