Sunderland AFC 2 – Accrington Stanley 1- Visitors to Stadium of Light leave with nothing

Sunderland AFC eased past Accrington Stanley in a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Stadium of Light. Both Sunderland AFC and Accrington Stanley arrived in good form, having secured victories in their previous matches. Sunderland AFC were looking to continue their run after winning their previous two games against Wycombe Wanderers at home and AFC Wimbledon at home, by 3-1 and 1-0 respectively. Accrington Stanley were able to continue their winning streak after a 1-0 win against Shrewsbury Town in their last match. Following today’s result, Sunderland AFC and Accrington Stanley are 1st, (15 points) and 6th, (12 points), spots respectively, after 7 matches.

It was an impressive opening from Sunderland AFC, with Dan Neill giving Sunderland AFC the lead in the 15th minute. However, their lead was short lived, as Michael Nottingham equalised for Accrington Stanley, 30 minutes in. The score at half time was 1-1.

Sunderland AFC rallied after this and were rewarded, thanks to Carl Winchester giving Sunderland AFC the lead, 58 minutes in, leaving the final score at 2-1.

For Sunderland AFC, Alex Pritchard and Bailey Wright, came on for Lynden Gooch and Elliot Embleton. Accrington Stanley brought on Ethan Hamilton, Joel Mumbongo and Jovan Malcolm, to replace Harry Pell, Mitchell Clarke and Matt Butcher.

There were bookings for Lynden Gooch, Tom Flanagan, Elliot Embleton and Alex Pritchard from Sunderland AFC. For Accrington Stanley, Harry Pell, Michael Nottingham and David Morgan saw yellow.

Sunderland AFC will next play Fleetwood Town away, with Accrington Stanley facing Wigan Athletic at home.
