Oxford United 5 – Accrington Stanley 1: Bad day for visitors at Kassam Stadium

Oxford United snatched all three points from Accrington Stanley in a 5-1 victory on Tuesday, at Kassam Stadium. With both teams drawing in their previous fixtures, they were keen to pick up points. Oxford United wanted to continue adding points following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Gillingham FC in their previous game. Accrington Stanley, on the other hand, secured a point against Morecambe FC in their previous match. After today’s result, Oxford United and Accrington Stanley currently occupy 8th and 12th spots in the table, with 15 points and 13 points respectively after 10 matches.

Oxford United started strongly in the first half, with Nathan Holland opening the rout, 18 minutes in. Oxford United then netted once more and increased their advantage thanks to a second effort from Nathan Holland, 24 minutes in and seeing the first half out 2-0.

Oxford United started strong in the second half and were able to dominate, with an early goal from Matty Taylor in the 50th minute. However, Accrington Stanley weren’t lying down and managed to pull back a goal from Ethan Hamilton, 61 minutes in. However, Oxford United increased their lead with a Mark Sykes goal at the 71 minute mark to make it 4-1. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a calamitous own goal from Michael Nottingham just before the final whistle to make it 5-1.

For Oxford United, Ryan Williams, Billy Bodin and Alex Gorrin, came on for Nathan Holland, James Henry and Herbie Kane. Accrington Stanley brought on Jack Nolan and Harry Pell, to replace Yeboah Amankwah and Seamus Conneely.

There were bookings for Steve Seddon, Herbie Kane, Elliott Moore and Ryan Williams from Oxford United, and Ross Sykes and Sean McConville, for Accrington Stanley.

Oxford United will next travel to Sheffield Wednesday, while Accrington Stanley will face Ipswich Town at home.
