R Madrid earn hard-fought win over Villarreal 2-1 on Saturday at the Alfredo di Stéfano. Both RMA and Villarreal arrived at the challenge after previous wins. RMA were looking to pick up points after winning their previous two matches in the competition. The most recent was against the Athletic Bilbao away (1-0), the other to Granada away (4-1). Villarreal were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against Seville and Real Valladolid. Following the final whistle at the end of the last game of the LaLiga season, RMA are in 2nd place on the table and has 84 points while Villarreal sit in 7th with 58 points after 38 matches.

The Yellow Submarine scored first, thanks to Yeremi Pino finding the net at the 20 minute mark, to take a 0-1 lead into half time.

RMA continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, with a goal from Karim Benzema in the 87th minute. However they weren’t finished yet and Luka Modric made it 2-1 just before the final whistle to make it 2-1.

For RMA, Rodrygo, Isco, Marcelo, Mariano Diaz and Nacho, came on for Vinicius Junior, Marco Asensio, Alvaro Odriozola, Casemiro and Miguel Gutierrez. Villarreal brought on Francis Coquelin, Ruben Pena, Paco Alcacer, Daniel Raba and Moi Gomez, to replace Carlos Bacca, Etienne Capoue, Yeremi Pino, Gerard Moreno and Manu Trigueros.
