Barça take all 3 points, after 2-1 victory against Athletic

Athletic fell to an away defeat at the hands of Barça at the Nou Camp on Sunday. Both Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao arrived fresh from some positive results. Barcelona were looking to continue their run after winning their previous two games in the competition. The most recent was against the Elche away (2-0), the other to Granada away (4-0). Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand, had been hopeful of extending their winning run, after a 5-1 victory against Getafe. Following today’s result, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao currently occupy 2nd and 11th spots in the table, with 40 points and 24 points respectively after 21 matches.

It was an impressive opening from Barcelona, following Lionel Messi opening the scoring in the 20th minute to see out the first half 1-0.

The second half started in favour of Athletic Bilbao, with early calamitous own goal from Jordi Alba in the 49th minute. However, Barcelona, 74 minutes in reestablished their lead thanks to a Antoine Griezmann goal. The game ended with a 2-1 victory for Barcelona.

For Barça, Sergi Roberto, Clement Lenglet and Martin Braithwaite came on for Unai Vencedor, Oscar De Marcos, Inaki Williams and Ander Capa, while Athletic brought on Mikel Vesga, Alex Berenguer, Asier Villalibre and Inigo Lekue to replace Unai Vencedor, Oscar De Marcos, Inaki Williams and Ander Capa.

There were bookings for Frenkie De Jong and Jordi Alba from Barça and Raul Garcia, Yeray Alvarez and Ander Capa for Athletic.

Barcelona will play their next fixture away against Real Betis, while Athletic Bilbao will face Valencia at home.
