Athletic Bilbao enjoyed a mesmerising home victory against Atletico Madrid at the Estadio San Mames on Sunday. Athletic Bilbao wanted to continue adding points after a scoreless draw against Real Betis in their previous match. Atleti were looking to extend their winning run after a 5-0 victory against Eibar. As the table looks today, Athletic Bilbao are in 9th place, with 41 points from 32 matches, while Atleti sit in 1st, with 73 points from 32.

The Lions started the first half well, with Alex Berenguer giving Athletic Bilbao the lead at the 8 minute mark to see out the first half 1-0.

Atleti took the initiative in the second half, thanks to a goal from Stefan Savic at the 77 minute mark. Athletic Bilbao in turn, then responded just before the final whistle increasing their lead with an effort from Inigo Martinez. The game ended with a 2-1 victory for Athletic Bilbao.

For Athletic Bilbao, Inigo Lekue, Inaki Williams, Mikel Vesga, Unai Lopez and Ibai Gomez, came on for Ander Capa, Asier Villalibre, Unai Vencedor, Oihan Sancet and Alex Berenguer. Atleti brought on Luis Suarez, Thomas Lemar, Joao Felix, Lucas Torreira and Mario Hermoso, to replace Saul Niguez, Hector Herrera, Kieran Trippier, Angel Correa and Renan Lodi.

There were bookings for Oihan Sancet, Unai Vencedor, Dani Garcia and Unai Lopez from Athletic Bilbao, and Marcos Llorente and Lucas Torreira, for Atleti.

Athletic Bilbao will next play Real Valladolid at home, with Atleti facing Elche away.
