This Thursday saw Villarreal secure an important 1-0 away win against Zagreb, in the opening leg of this Europa League tie. In the previous phase, Zagreb won against Tottenham Hotspur, while Villarreal managed to beat Dynamo Kyiv. This result, now creates more pressure for Zagreb, ahead of their visit to at Villarreal for the return leg, where they will hope to secure a place in the next stage of the tournament.

Villarreal started strongly in the first half, with Gerard Moreno giving Villarreal the lead just before half-time. The score at half time was 0-1. Both teams struggled to produce anything meaningful in the second half, leaving the final score at 1-0.

For Zagreb, Bruno Petkovic, Lirim Kastrati, Marin Leovac, Marko Tolic and Bartol Franjic, came on for Carlos Bacca, Samuel Chukwueze and Manu Trigueros. Villarreal replaced Paco Alcacer, Moi Gomez and Ruben Pena with Carlos Bacca, Samuel Chukwueze and Manu Trigueros.

The referee booked one player from Villarreal, Gerard Moreno.

Zagreb will now travel to play Villarreal on 15 April, to decide who will advance to the next stage.
