RMA go into the return leg with the knowledge that they can score against The Pensioners, so they will be hopeful of gaining a valuable away goal. They will, however, be mindful of having also conceded anyway goal, something that they will need to overcome. In the previous phase of the Champions League, Los Blancos won against Liverpool, while Chelsea were able to eliminate Porto. Thomas Tuchel's men will also be confident at home when they face RMA in the 2nd leg. They too have scored against these opponents, and away from home. This gives them the literal advantage, as well as the psychological one when they next play at their own ground.
The Blues started strong and were rewarded for their efforts, thanks to a goal from Christian Pulisic, 14 minutes in. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Karim Benzema equalised for Los Blancos, 29 minutes in to see out the first half 1-1. The second half ended with little further action at either end and goalless.
For RMA, Eden Hazard, Alvaro Odriozola, Marco Asensio and Rodrygo, came on for Vinicius Junior, Dani Carvajal, Marcelo and Karim Benzema. Chelsea replaced Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and Cesar Azpilicueta with Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Reece James.
There were bookings for Vinicius Junior, Toni Kroos, Marcelo, Raphael Varane and Alvaro Odriozola from RMA. For Chelsea, Christian Pulisic saw yellow.
RMA will now travel to play Chelsea on 5 May, to decide who will advance to the next stage.
