RB Leipzig take the points and enjoy a home win against Mainz 05

Leipzig fell to an away defeat at the hands of Mainz at the Opel Arena on Saturday. Mainz 05 arrived at the game looking pick up points, following a previous defeat to Wolfsburg. RB Leipzig had been hopeful of extending their winning run, after a 1-0 victory against Union Berlin. At the moment, Mainz 05 are in 17th place, with 10 points from 18 matches, while RB Leipzig sit in 2nd, with 35 points from 18.

RB Leipzig started the first half well, beginning with Tyler Adams opening the scoring, 15 minutes in. However, their lead was short lived, as an equalizer from a goal from Moussa Niakhate, 24 minutes in brought Mainz 05 level. RB Leipzig reestablished their lead thanks to a goal from Marcel Halstenberg in the 30th minute to establish the 2-1. However, they didn’t maintain the lead for long though, an equalizer from another Moussa Niakhate in the 35th minute brought Mainz 05 level, which saw the first half end 2-2.

The second half started all good for Mainz 05, thanks to early goal from Leandro Martins in the 50th minute. The game ended with a 3-2 victory for Mainz 05.

For Mainz 05 Levin Oztunali, Adam Szalai, Kevin Stoger, Niklas Tauer and Jonathan Michael Burkardt came on for Danny Latza, Robin Quaison, Philipp Mwene, Dominik Kohr and Leandro Martins, while Leipzig brought on Christopher Nkunku, Lazar Samardzic, Justin Kluivert, Hee-chan Hwang and Nordi Mukiele to replace Marcel Halstenberg, Amadou Haidara, Emil Forsberg, Dani Olmo and Tyler Adams.

There were bookings for Moussa Niakhate and Danny Da Costa from Mainz and Marcel Halstenberg, Tyler Adams, Willi Orban and Alexander Sorloth for Leipzig.

Mainz 05 will next play Stuttgart away, with RB Leipzig facing Bayer Leverkusen at home.
