Mainz – Borussia Dortmund: Die Borussen cruise past Mainz, in a 3-1 away win

Mainz on home loss to Borussia Dortmund at the OPEL Arena on Sunday. Mainz wanted to improve their league standing after a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt whilst Dortmund were hoping to increase their winning streak after back-to-back victories against RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg. After today’s result, Mainz and Dortmund currently occupy 13th and 4th spots in the league, with 36 points and 58 points respectively after 33 matches.

Dortmund started the game well, thanks to a goal from Raphael Guerreiro, 23 minutes in. Dortmund then scored once more and increased their advantage thanks to a goal from Marco Reus just before half-time, finishing the first half 0-2.

Die Borussen continued to apply pressure in the second and were rewarded, with Julian Brandt finding the net, on 80 minutes. In the end though, Mainz just before the final whistle hit back though via a Robin Quaison goal. The game ended with a 3-1 victory for Dortmund.

For Mainz, Robin Quaison, Edimilson Fernandes, Adam Szalai, Kevin Stoger and Dominik Kohr, came on for Robert Glatzel, Danny Da Costa, Karim Onisiwo, Jean-Paul Boetius and Danny Latza. Dortmund brought on Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, Nico Schulz, Reinier and Thomas Delaney for Giovanni Reyna, Marco Reus, Raphael Guerreiro, Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham.

Mainz will play away against Wolfsburg, while Dortmund will face Bayer Leverkusen at home.
